COSMOS is a drifting memory station designed to work with meditative states through music. The design of the controls, functions and generated soundscapes are intended to evoke, in both performer and listener, states and experiences inherent in meditation, such as limitless space, fluidity, spontaneous development, presence, the ability to hear, tranquility, the experience of subtle harmony and happiness enveloping the whole world.
From a functional point of view, COSMOS is a large array of sound memory, in which recorded sounds undergo constant recombinations, spontaneously generating an ever-changing soundscape. This is achieved in three ways — by a mathematical shift based on the relationships between large prime numbers (the size of all delay lines are different primes), an asynchronous operation of the LFO, and modulation with a slowly changing chaotic signal. As a result, it allows the endless layering and processing of various sounds, as in a looper, but without an intrusive, repetitive loop.

COSMOS generates rich, fluid and evolving soundscapes perfect for ambient music. Using COSMOS, you can play an entire meditative solo concert while being in a spontaneous flow and without using studio-prepared sequences, backing tracks and other things that can’t be a reflection of the “here and now”.
Who Is This For?
-
Ambient & Drone Artists: Solo performers who want to execute entire long-form meditative concerts live in the moment, without backing tracks or pre-arranged sequences.
-
Experimental Guitarists & Vocalists: Players looking to turn a single monophonic instrument or voice into vast, cinematic orchestral pads and multi-layered textures.
FAQs
FAQs
Q: Is COSMOS just a standard delay pedal or a traditional looper?
A: Neither. While it uses digital delay lines and holds a memory bank like a looper, its execution is completely unique. Traditional loopers overlay phrases on top of a fixed time loop. COSMOS takes your incoming recorded phrases and intentionally drifts them out of phase using prime number mathematics and chaotic modulation. It is designed to create fluid, non-repetitive textures rather than locked, rhythmic musical loops.
Q: Can I sync the COSMOS to a specific MIDI clock or master tempo?
A: The stock firmware on the COSMOS is deliberately asynchronous, meaning it contains no MIDI ports or tap tempo inputs because its goal is to break free from rigid timing grids. However, SOMA Laboratory offers an alternative Rhythmic Looper firmware that you can load onto the unit via a standard USB flash drive. This alternative software rewrites the device's logic, turning it into a tempo-based phrase machine with specific multi-bar channel divisions for rhythmic playing contexts.
Q: What does the "Suppressor" control do on the front panel?
A: The Suppressor (the first half of the SUP/COM knob scale) dictates how newly played notes interact with sounds already cycling through the memory bank. When turned up, loud incoming notes will dynamically push down and "erase" older layers in the background. This allows you to play indefinitely without your loop turning into an unreadable wall of mud, as the device automatically handles the density of your arrangement based on how loudly you play.
Q: What happens if the Sound Level indicator goes into the red zone?
A: Unlike standard digital processors that emit a harsh, unpleasant digital clipping noise when overloaded, COSMOS features a built-in soft-knee brickwall limiter. When your audio layers accumulate and push the signal into the red, the internal limiter responds similarly to vintage magnetic tape recorders—introducing a gentle, musically pleasing analog-style overdrive and natural compression that you can use intentionally as an artistic effect.
