About the Future Retro Vectra
Step into a world of hyper-expressive tactile sound design. The Future Retro Vectra is a stunning, self-contained hybrid analog/digital vector synthesizer that boldly re-imagines how we perform electronic music. Marrying the infinite sonic flexibility of a deep digital sound engine with the rich, uncompromised warmth of an analog backend, the Vectra immediately commands attention via its striking geometric workspace: a flat, responsive 29-key capacitive touch keyboard flanked by a quad-array of interactive performance joysticks.
The sound engine features four digital oscillators running virtual-analog modeling alongside over 500 complex digital waveforms. Sound designers can push these sound sources into extreme territory utilizing FM, ring modulation, oscillator sync, and Future Retro's proprietary Phase Slice and Fade algorithms. These digital sources, along with independent pink and white noise generators, pass directly into a stunning multimode analog filter with 18 circuit variations (spanning 1, 2, and 4-pole low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, and notch topologies). The path terminates at a genuine analog VCA, ensuring every digital grain is steeped in harmonic, voltage-controlled grit.

Interacting with the Vectra is unlike any other hardware experience. Its 29-note capacitive touch surface reads note on/off, velocity, pitch, and aftertouch, enabling distinct microtonal gliding behaviors across 29 selectable quantized scales. Real-time dynamic mixing is driven by four tactile joysticks—assigned to Pitchbend/Modulation, a 4-channel Vector Mixer, Filter Cutoff/Resonance, and a fully customizable, user-assignable target plane. Backed by 5 audio-rate LFOs, 6 looping DAHDSR morphing envelopes, and a performance-oriented 16-step sequencer, the Vectra is a brilliant modern oddball built for deep space drones, evolving cinematic textures, and complex rhythmic paraphony.
FAQs
FAQs
Q: What exactly is Vector Synthesis, and how do the joysticks on the Vectra control it?
A: Vector synthesis provides dynamic, evolving acoustic movement by allowing you to smoothly blend and crossfade between four independent sound sources arranged on an X and Y axis. On the Vectra, your four digital oscillators act as points A, B, C, and D on that grid. Moving the dedicated Vector Mixer joystick across the plane changes the volume balances between all four oscillators simultaneously in real-time, letting you shift smoothly from a clean virtual-analog saw wave to glassy, digital waveshapes mid-note.
Q: Does the capacitive touch keyboard feel or behave like a standard plastic keybed?
A: No, it feels completely flat, layout-wise similar to instruments like the Arturia MicroFreak or Buchla touch plates. Because it uses skin capacitance rather than physical mechanical springs, it responds instantly to the lightest touch. Despite having no moving parts, it is incredibly expressive—transmitting highly precise pitch bend, velocity, polyphonic scale-gliding, and continuous pressure aftertouch depending on how much skin surface area presses against the plate.
Q: What makes the envelopes on the Vectra "morphing" envelopes?
A: The Vectra houses 6 advanced DAHDSR (Delay, Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelopes with a massive timing range of 0ms to 14.7 seconds per stage. They are considered "morphing" because each stage of the envelope can hold two completely separate time or shape values simultaneously. As you perform or run the sequencer, the envelope can morph fluidly between those two parameter states, introducing organic structural changes over time.
Q: Can I use the Vectra to process external audio through its analog multimode filter?
A: No. The Vectra features a single 1/4" unbalanced mono line output and does not include a physical external audio input jack. The internal analog filter array and analog VCA are explicitly hardwired to process the synth's internal digital sound sources (the four oscillators, noise block, and ring modulators).
