SELECTOR 8 is an additional accessory for SOLAR 50, SOLAR 42, and SOLAR 42F/N

It is a passive selector switch and a set of contact microphones, radio, and pendant.

It can also be used as a switch for audio sources, for connection to the SOLAR external input. Or for use as a separate selector switch.

It has 8 inputs and one output, 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm audio connectors.

Turn the physical world around you into a playground for experimental synthesis. The ELTA Music Selector-8 is an innovative, 100% passive multi-channel switchbox and a comprehensive sound-capture bundle designed as the ultimate companion to the Solar 42, Solar 42F/N, and Solar 50 drone synthesizers. Built for curious sound designers, field recordists, and avant-garde musicians, the Selector-8 serves as a tactile bridge to pipe external acoustic energy, electromagnetic interference, and found objects directly into your synthesizer's preamp or external audio inputs.

Operating entirely without batteries or external power, the selector module features an elegant bi-directional 8-to-1 rotary knob switch architecture. To offer ultimate hardware flexibility, every single one of its 8 input channels is outfitted with both 3.5mm mini-jack and 1/4" (6.3mm) audio sockets. This allows you to patch up to eight separate sound sources or physical texturing elements simultaneously and instantly click between them on the fly.

Far more than a simple patch assistant, the Selector-8 arrives as a complete master set of sensory sound sources. By utilizing the included trio of specialized contact microphones (magnetic jar, heavy-duty clamp, and acoustic suction cup), an FM radio receiver for static atmospheric artifacts, and an 8-bit visualizer glitch pendant, the Selector-8 seamlessly transforms random physical environments into rich, self-modulating, and completely organic CV envelopes.

FAQs

Q: Does the Selector-8 require external power or a battery to operate?
A: No, the main Selector-8 switchbox is a completely passive device. It handles routing mechanic paths mechanically via the central channel selector knob and audio lines without requiring any external power source or battery grids. Note: The companion pocket FM radio and Quantum VJ glitch pendant sources run on their own internal/battery power architectures.

Q: Can the Selector-8 function backwards as an output router?
A: Yes! Because the switching architecture is completely passive and analog, the circuitry is entirely bi-directional. While it is most commonly used to route eight sound sources into a single synthesizer preamp line, it can easily function in reverse—taking 1 audio signal source input and selecting which of the 8 destination hardware pieces to send it out to.

Q: How do I minimize the "clicks" when switching channels during playback?
A: Because the preamp inputs on synthesizers like the Solar 42 series are incredibly hot and sensitive, mechanical switching can occasionally produce brief audio clicks. ELTA Music recommends connecting all your desired microphone sensors and radio lines first, then quickly cycling the rotary selection knob through channels 1 to 8 a few times continuously. This discharges the static signal imbalances across the passive inputs and keeps switching exceptionally quiet during subsequent runtime performances.

Q: Is the aluminum jar contact microphone completely waterproof?
A: The internal contact microphone element within the aluminum housing is completely filled and sealed with a heavy-duty industrial compound sealant, making the microphone pickup itself submersible and safe for underwater recording experiments. However, the outer metal jar casing itself is not fully airtight; if it is submerged, it is best practice to unscrew the threaded top lid and let the inner enclosure dry completely after your recording session concludes.
