Q: What is the main difference between The Dust Collector and The Dirt Magnet?
A: While The Dust Collector focuses on spring reverb, optical phasing, and diode saturation, The Dirt Magnet shifts its focus completely to tape-style degradation, textures, and echoes. Its primary engine is a mechanical cassette tape loop delay, paired with dedicated generators specifically engineered to synthesize vinyl crackle, hiss, and dust textures.

Q: Can I use standard cassette tapes with the tape delay module?
A: Yes! The Dirt Magnet features an exposed, open-chassis tape delay unit that uses a standard, replaceable cassette tape loop mechanism. Performers can easily swap out the tape loop cassette or manually interact with the moving tape for experimental pitch warbling and live tape scratching effects.

Q: What modules are built into the hardware panel?
A: The Dirt Magnet bundles six highly patchable modules into a single desktop unit: two wide-range MIDI-syncable CV LFOs, a noise generator (with VC band-pass filter and independent VCA), a voltage-controlled vinyl crackle emulator, an analog ring modulator, a multi-mode VC filter, and the mechanical cassette tape delay system.

Q: How does the CV integration work with external modular or Eurorack gear?
A: Every single section of the unit features standard mini-jack mini patch points for Control Voltage (CV) interaction. You can utilize the two internal LFOs to drive external Eurorack modules via the dedicated CV and inverted CV outputs, or send external modular envelopes and gates into the unit to modulate parameters like tape delay time, crackle intensity, and filter cutoff.

2x CV LFOs

Just as before, a pair of LFO modules are included to serve as a starting point. However, The Dirt Magnet’s LFOs are digital, so they now sync to MIDI, have a wider and stable frequency range, and can generate more waveform types.

These LFO’s are not identical, though: LFO 2 has an extra Offset parameter.

Noise

This noise source is intended as an additional starting block in your sound explorations. Use it to create sound effects, hi-hats (paired with the LFO’s Envelope waveform) or anything else that requires a dash of  noise…

To allow for precise and dynamic control, the noise passes through a BandPass filter with CV modulation. The audio from the inputs, if present, is mixed with the generated noise, allowing for easy layering.

Crackle

Just like the noise source, this crackle generator is here  to help dirty up sounds before or after passing through the other effects.

The crackles’ density can be controlled by a knob and CV.

This module also features a High-Pass filter. The audio from the inputs, if present, is mixed with the crackles, allowing for easy layering.

Ring Modulator

This is a simple analog ring modulator with the classic audio signal input that gets modulated by the carrier CV.

Simple as it is, this effect can be very creative depending on the modulation it is fed…

VCF

This filter is a variation on the well known MS20 VCF and we chose it for its raw sound. Then, we made it bite.

The cutoff can be modulated and, if set to self-oscillate, it can deliver deep kick sounds.

Tape Delay

This two-tap tape delay uses a replaceable cassette tape loop. It contains a stereo input preamp with tone control and a VCA in the feedback loop. The tape’s speed is also CV controllable.
