Sound Design Laboratory

The Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab 2 is a cutting edge synthesis laboratory that offers a new palette of analog textures and waveforms to sonic researchers. Newly developed wave shaping capabilities paired with powerful synthesis tools, and a deep, performance oriented controller join together to create a complete sound design laboratory. This instrument has a very physical sound. The tones it creates feel natural and alive, with traditional waveforms becoming the seeds of unique new shapes and sounds that shift between analog physical modeling and more unfamiliar, abstract timbres.

Reimagine the boundaries of analog sound design with an instrument built for pure sonic exploration. Designed in the USA, the Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab 2 is a standalone, semi-modular dual-laboratory analog synthesizer and tactile performance instrument. Evolving far beyond traditional subtractive synthesis, the Voltage Lab 2 combines innovative West Coast-inspired wavewarping, organic dynamics processing, and a multi-channel Touch Controller to create a deeply expressive generative synthesizer ecosystem.

At its core are two custom Laboratory Oscillators featuring Pittsburgh’s revolutionary Wavewarper technology, linear FM, ring modulation, and deep cross-modulation capabilities. Audio flows into dual Pittsburgh Dynamics Controllers—a modern evolution of the classic low-pass gate (LPG) that manages amplitude and harmonic warmth without harsh digital artifacts. Combined with dual multi-stage Function Generators, an integrated analog reflection delay, and a 101-point patch bay, the Voltage Lab 2 offers an endless canvas for drones, generative sequences, and acoustic physical modeling.

Blip Expert Take The original Voltage Lab was a landmark in organic, experimental synthesis, but the Voltage Lab 2 completely redefines what a semi-modular instrument can do. Pittsburgh Modular abandoned standard sub-additive topologies to focus entirely on organic movement. The Wavewarper circuitry continuously shifts harmonic overtones, while the dual Dynamics Controllers deliver that iconic acoustic percussive plunk and decay that traditional VCAs simply cannot match.

The standalone Generative Touch Controller on the lower panel transforms the synth into a living instrument. Featuring 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive touch pads, a multi-channel step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and algorithmic generative capabilities, you can play expressive microtonal scales, trigger evolving sequences, or let the synthesizer sculpt its own self-generating compositions.

Who Is This For?

Experimental & Ambient Composers: Sound designers looking for a self-contained generative synthesizer to create organic drones, generative textures, and acoustic physical modeling.

Modular Explorers & Live Improvisers: Performers who want the patchability and chaos of a full Eurorack rig inside a sleek, standalone desktop box with an expressive touch controller.

The Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab 2 is a flagship dual-chassis analog synthesizer and generative tactile performance instrument, representing the pinnacle of Pittsburgh Modular’s sonic engineering and West Coast synthesis philosophy.

At the core of Voltage Lab 2 are two revolutionary Laboratory Oscillators featuring continuous wavefolding, through-zero FM, and dynamic harmonic shaping that produce organic, acoustic-like acoustic timbres alongside devastating electronic growls. The audio path flows into Pittsburgh’s signature Dynamics Section—a pair of advanced Low Pass Gates (LPGs) that replicate the natural pluck, resonance, and decay of acoustic instruments.

Voltage Lab 2 is paired with an expansive 16-key capacitive touch controller and multi-channel generative sequencer. Featuring assignable scale modes, polyphonic step sequencing, probability chance parameters, and real-time touch articulation, it transforms complex modular sound design into an intuitive, expressive performance.

Equipped with dual analog function generators, Pittsburgh's Florist BBD stereo analog delay, and an exhaustive 101-point Eurorack-compatible patchbay, Voltage Lab 2 stands as a complete, standalone modular laboratory ready for immediate studio exploration.

Scope of delivery: Voltage Lab 2 synthesizer chassis, Touch Controller chassis, custom dual-tier wooden/aluminum desktop side cheeks, universal 15V DC power supply, 10× Nazca braided patch cables, 3.5mm to 5-pin DIN MIDI adapter, quickstart guide, stickers.

FAQs

Q: Do I need to use patch cables to produce sound on the Voltage Lab 2?
A: No. The Voltage Lab 2 features an extensive internal normalled signal path. You can power up the instrument, touch the control pads or send MIDI, and generate rich West Coast analog tones immediately. Using patch cables allows you to override these default connections and create complex generative soundscapes.

Q: What is the difference between a traditional VCA and the Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller?
A: Standard VCAs simply adjust volume, which can sound sterile. The Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller is an advanced evolution of the Low Pass Gate (LPG). It simultaneously manages amplitude and harmonic brightness—as volume drops, high frequencies naturally roll off, mimicking how natural acoustic instruments resonate and decay.
