The Roto-Control by Melbourne Instruments redefines hardware and software interactions with its revolutionary motorized, touch-sensitive knobs. Compact, portable, and packed with groundbreaking features, this controller offers a fully assignable interface with high-resolution screens for clear labeling and an internal memory capable of storing over 16,000 assignments. With three versatile modes—MIX, PLUGIN, and MIDI—Roto-Control integrates seamlessly with Ableton Live and MIDI-compatible hardware and software, providing unparalleled control for audio mixing, plugin management, and MIDI automation. The Motion Recorder feature introduces motorized knob automation, allowing users to loop and automate parameters creatively and efficiently. Designed for both studio and live performance, the Roto-Control combines intuitive operation with precision engineering, making it a game-changer for musicians, producers, and performers alike.

Max support for Roto-Control

Melbourne Instruments announce native Cycling ’74 Max integration for Roto-Control. With Max now supported directly in PLUGIN Mode, Roto-Control becomes a powerful hands-on interface for creating and using custom instruments, audio, MIDI effects, and performance tools built in Max. Motorized knobs, touch-and-learn mapping, and haptic feedback bring physical control and recall to Max’s customizable user interfaces — bridging visual patching with tactile performance.

Logic Pro integration for ROTO-CONTROL

Roto-Control introduces a fully tactile, motorized controller for Logic Pro users, delivering fast, hands-on control of tracks, plugins, smart controls and automation.

MIX Mode mirrors Logic Pro's session track names, colours and order, while providing high-resolution control of volume, pan, sends, and instant access to mute, solo, record-arm and track focus.

PLUGIN Mode allows users to browse and select Logic Pro instruments and effects directly from Roto-Control. Parameters can be mapped instantly using touch-and-learn, with up to eight pages of controls stored on the device ready for any project.

Smart Controls are automatically mapped, offering up to 16 parameters available in both PLUGIN Mode and the dedicated SMART Mode.

FAQs

Q: Can the Roto-Control be used to control external hardware synths without a computer?

A: Yes, absolutely. The Roto-Control features a dedicated standalone MIDI Mode and includes full, legacy 5-pin DIN MIDI In, Out, and Thru ports on its back panel. You can store up to 64 completely custom MIDI configurations directly within the device's internal memory. This allows you to control desktop synthesizer modules, Eurorack interfaces, or outboard studio effects units completely untethered from a computer or DAW setup.

Q: What is the "Motion Recorder" feature and how do I use it?

A: The Motion Recorder is a built-in parameter automation sequencer that functions like a virtual modulation source. While playing a software plugin or an external hardware synth, you can engage the recorder to record live knob movements across up to 8 parameters simultaneously. The Roto-Control quantizes and loops these paths over selectable step lengths (16, 32, 48, or 64 steps) synchronized to an internal or external MIDI clock. You can then sit back and watch the motorized knobs physically mimic your automated modulations in forward, backward, ping-pong, or random directions.

Q: Do I have to re-map my plugins every time I open a new project or switch computers?

A: No, because the custom plugin mappings are stored directly on the Roto-Control hardware itself, rather than inside a specific DAW project folder. Using the intuitive one-touch "LEARN" system, you map a plugin’s parameters once. The next time you select that plugin in any project, on any compatible computer, the Roto-Control instantly identifies it, populates the correct custom names and track colors on the IPS screens, and spins the motors to match the exact active coordinates.

Q: Why are there two separate USB-C ports on the back panel?

A: Because motorized components require more power than a standard computer or laptop USB bus port can stably supply, the Roto-Control splits its power and data duties. One USB-C port acts as a class-compliant, high-speed bidirectional data connection for your computer or DAW link. The second, separate USB-C port connects directly to the included external 5V (15W) power adapter to ensure the brushless drone motors can spin rapidly and smoothly without power sagging.

For a comprehensive walkthrough of the haptic configurations and a detailed deep-dive into how these drone-motor encoders perform during real-world automation tweaks, check out the Sonicstate Melbourne Instruments Roto-Control Review. This video review is particularly helpful as it showcases the physical movement, sound levels, and tactile preset transformations of the motorized knobs in real-time.
